What are the dates of the program?
The student’s program runs June 3 – July 12, 2024. Weekly programs will be held in person at the library, as well as extra-special happenings that will be announced periodically. A typical week looks like this:

Wednesdays: 1:00-2:00pm – Grades 1-4
Wednesdays: 2:30-3:30pm- Grades 5-8
Thursdays: 2:30-3:30pm- Grades 5-8
The adult’s program runs June 3 – August 16, 2024. Weekly programs will be held in-person at the library or around the community, and will be announced closer to dates. Expect things like free yoga classes, an international music concert series, and the return of the Zoo @ the Library!
What are we tracking?
The student program will track minutes read, in increments of 20 and a goal of 1,000 total minutes. Teens will also be able to track books read. Completing 1,000 minutes will win prizes, with other incentives along the way! Even if we don’t reach a full 1,000 minutes, just by reading this summer you have won, so be sure to turn in your reading log no matter what!
The adult program will track minutes read via the app Beanstack. This app will also allow you to track books read, post reviews, see curated lists, and more. Each adult goal is to read 3,500 minutes in the 10 weeks of the program.

What if I can’t attend many or any programs? Can I still participate?
ABSOLUTELY! The ultimate goal and reasoning behind the summer reading program is to encourage reading and literacy between the end of the school year and beginning of the next. Even if you never step foot in the library over the summer, track how many minutes you read to be eligible for prizes and part of the amazing SRP community.
Why do students have to be going into 1st grade? Can younger kiddos participate?
The goal is to avoid the “summer slide” that happens when kiddos read less over the summer and consequently drop their reading scores in the fall, and for that the child needs to be in school. However, we are still hosting Preschool Storytime every week for those who haven’t made it through kindergarten quite yet!

Do I need a library card to participate?
NO! We are happy to offer a seasonal library card at no charge to out-of-county residents for the summer (normally this is $20/year), but if you do not have a Lake Region Public Library card, that is no problem at all. The goal is reading, no matter what that looks like for you!
Do audiobooks count?
Sure do! Audiobooks also promote literacy, so we’re more than happy to count minutes listened as minutes read.

Okay, you’ve convinced me. Where do I sign up?
